How Can Construction Work Damage Underground Drains?
Damage occurs in several different ways.
Direct impact remains one of the most obvious causes. Excavators, mechanical diggers and other construction equipment can strike buried pipes if their precise location is unknown.
Heavy machinery can also compress the ground above drainage systems. Older clay pipes, ageing concrete drains and already weakened sections may struggle to withstand the additional pressure.
Ground movement represents another significant risk.
Excavation changes the support surrounding underground pipes. As soil settles naturally after construction, sections of drainage may shift, creating slight misalignment at pipe joints.
Although these changes may initially seem insignificant, they can eventually allow water to escape, encourage root intrusion or reduce the efficiency of wastewater flow.
Building materials accidentally entering open drains also create problems.
Concrete, mortar, plaster, rubble and other construction debris can enter drainage systems if suitable protective measures are not taken throughout the project.
These materials often harden inside pipes, creating stubborn blockages that require specialist removal.
