Pitch fiber is a type of reinforced plastic consisting of a resin-impregnated glass fiber mat used in the construction industry. It was developed in the late 1940s by the British ICI company and was first used commercially in the 1950s. Pitch fiber pipes are made by impregnating a glass fiber mat with a synthetic resin, which is then cured (hardened) by heat.
The resulting material is strong and stiff and can be used to reinforce concrete, masonry, or timber structures as well as to make pitch fiber pipes and tanks. Pitch fiber is not as widely used as other types of reinforced plastic, such as fiberglass or carbon fiber, but it has some advantages over these materials. For example, it is more resistant to chemicals, does not conduct electricity, and is water resistant.
